Ways of Promoting Taiwan's Visibility
二技應外一甲/林逸仙
Last year, I was one of the volunteers of 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung and had a chance to meet many people from other countries. During the break time of games, we shared many different things together, such as food, culture, lives and so on. When we talked about the impressions of Taiwan in other nations, to my surprises, most of them said they have no clear pictures about Taiwan before they came here. It’s a serious issue for Taiwan to be unknown. Since Taiwan is only a small island in Asia, we can hardly survive without visibility and interaction with other nations. Moreover, because of a big political issue between Taiwan and China, neither we have any chance to join an important international organization such as the United Nations nor get supports from other countries in diplomacy. However, there are still some ways to promote Taiwan’s visibility.
First of all, Taiwan can actively strive for being the host of international activities. Holding different kinds of international activities attracts foreigners to visit Taiwan and also be exposed by media from other countries. Take 2009 Kaohsiung World Games as an example, not only had many foreign athletes come to Taiwan, but also the judges, sport fans and journalists. Moreover, because of news media, those people who were in their own countries would get the information about the games and Taiwan on TV as well. Therefore, holding the international activities is a good way to show Taiwan to people from other nations.
The second way to promote Taiwan’s visibility is to participate in the international activities. Attending international activities no matter what they are related to sport or something else, because any international activity is a good opportunity to increase other people’s impressions of Taiwan and let them know about us. For instance, Taiwan joined the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. The event attracted more than 70 million of people around the world. As one of the exhibitioners with the impressive exhibitions of technology, commodities and culture, Taiwan not only showed its specialties and beauties but also gave an unforgettable impression to the world.
The last one is promote Taiwan by multi-media. As technology is well-developed in this island nation, there are plenty of media we can use to demonstrate Taiwan’s development and beauty. For example, the Internet is no doubt the easiest and fastest medium to present Taiwan. With internet, we can show the official traveling commercials, introduction videos of delicacies and customs in Taiwan. Also, some interesting self-made videos will attract people’s attentions of Taiwan. Therefore, Taiwan’s visibility will be improved by the power of the Internet.
To sum up, visibility is definitely important to Taiwan since it’s a small island and it relies on international trades. Although Taiwan cannot be a member of an influential international organization like the United Nations, there are still some ways for Taiwan to be noticed by the world. If we put more efforts on holding or participating the international activities and also promoting ourselves by multi-media, won’t our visibility be increased even though we are suppressed by China?
