Taiwan is regarded as an inconspicuous country on the global stage. Although Taiwan’s government has been gradually making progress in drawing international attention, further progress can be expected. In terms of the policies of Taiwan’s government, I consider four main parts, holding international activity, improving tourism, sponsoring elites, and establishing own brands can be reinforced in order to promote Taiwan’s international visibility.
Firstly, Taiwan’s government should strive for holding some international activities such as Deaflympics Taipei in 2009 and Taipei Flower Expo in 2010, which may attract foreigners and tourists come to Taiwan. Thus, more and more people can get the chance to know about Taiwan. Like during Deaflympics, Taiwanese volunteers helped and interacted with athletes from all over the world. These definitely made athletes with more understanding about Taiwan no matter in which aspects and interchanged cultural knowledge between country to country.
Secondly, tourism plays an eminently essential role to promote Taiwan’s visibility. The government and private enterprises should work hand in hand to make Taiwan an enjoyable island in which travelers can conveniently visit scenic and cultural attractions of international standard. Moreover, Taiwan is abundant in fascinating scenery such as Sun Moon Lake and Taroko Gorge where tourists can indulge in, diverse and exotic cultures such as aboriginal tribes where they can experience. Furthermore, they can taste local and international cuisines such as Dumplings, Pearl Milk Tea, and Fried chicken. In fact, there are many more appeals that government can promote in Taiwan.
Thirdly, we do have a lot of talented intellectuals. Many Taiwanese elites are doing great jobs abroad. For example, Chien-Ming Wang who plays baseball in the U.S.A, Yuan Tseh Lee who won Nobel Prizes in chemistry , Lin Yu-chun who has a excellent voice and is famous for singing "I Will Always Love You" (originally by Dolly Parton) in the style of Whitney Houston's cover version, and even recently controversial figure SHU-CHUN YANG who was unfairly disqualified in taekwondo competition. By sponsoring outstanding Taiwanese is also a feasible way to help them to shine on the global stage, which can boost Taiwan’s positive recognition widely.
Fourthly, most enterprises in Taiwan hold up at Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) stage for a long time, and the products especially electronic products that we made gain excellent reputation globally. Based on our enterprises’ skills, the government and businesses should try their best to establish their own brand, which means we should not only stay at OEM stage but also advance to OBM (Original Brand Manufacturer) stage. In this case, more people can pay attention to Taiwan’s techniques. Acer and Asus are standard examples to make explosive awareness on the global stage, and Taiwan should launch other OBM products to hit the big time.
In conclusion, in the recently years, I have sensed that the government becomes conscious of the importance of globalization, and do some good works for international interaction. Of course there are a lot more policies that the government could implement, but I think top priorities are international activities, tourism, sponsorship, and own brand.

Taiwan is an island near the south-east coast of China. It is a place that is often overlooked when reading a world map; an island too small to be aware of. However, there are many ways to make Taiwan come into the eyes of people all over the world. The most obvious one is by holding international events in Taiwan, especially those which are watched by a wide range of people. In addition, encouraging tourists to come visit can also boost Taiwan’s visibility. Finally, sending high achieving Taiwanese individuals to other countries for important events can promote Taiwan and increase its visibility.
International events are commonly watched by people worldwide, either through television, internet websites or other mediums. Sporting matches like The Deaf Olympics and The World Games are broadcasted around the globe. Participants from different countries travel to Taiwan, and the citizens belonging to the same country watch their representatives through the media. Other than international sporting events, expositions such as The Flower Exposition are other great events which increase tourism in Taiwan. These international events expose Taiwan to the naked eyes of the people watching, thus raising Taiwan’s visibility. Plus, if the event is well held, it will also benefit the country by promoting it while encouraging more tourists to visit.
Tourism promotes Taiwan by giving the tourist good impressions when traveling there. The objective of a tourist is to see, feel, hear and taste the unique things from a different country. Other than sight-seeing, cultural tourism is a type of tourism which it’s percentage in all tourism has been rising at a speeding rate around the world. This type of tourism promotes the aboriginal cultures, and thereupon has an immediate effect on people’s images of Taiwan. The more interesting it seems, the larger amount of people will visit this country. Leaving a good impression on tourists through our behavior and manners can encourage more tourists to come and raise the status of Taiwan in the mind of others.
People that represent Taiwan in other countries also represent Taiwan’s standard. For example, Chien-Ming Wang is a great baseball player and increases the status of Taiwan’s baseball standard. Also, this country is packed with many incredibly smart students that have earned awards in tournaments for math, machine technology, the Japanese game of Go and many more. They represent a part of Taiwanese people, which is the genius of machine technologies and logic games.
Tourism gives Taiwan and its people a chance to leave good impressions on foreigners. Holding international events such as The Flower Exposition and The World Games exposes Taiwan through mediums and raises Taiwan’s visibility. Superb ambassadors in both physical (e.g. baseball) and mental (e.g. math) areas raise Taiwan’s status. All the things above can all achieve at the very least this one thing: promote Taiwan’s visibility!
